Feb 19th sees eccentric quintet Highasakite, currently amidst a flurry of activity in the wake of their ‘Silent Treatment’ album release, playing a Ja Ja Ja Music/Kilimanjaro launch party at London’s Birthdays. The event represents a unique opportunity for fans to get their hands on the album two weeks before it’s official UK release.
“The band is an intriguing proposition, matching blissful indie pop with electronic inflections to a rare sense of fantasy” – Clash Music
Highasakite inhabit their own rare musical landscape, a place of long dark shadows, sudden flashes of glittering light, brooding silences and unexpected explosions of fierce percussion. Ingrid Håvik’s surrealistic lyrics and ardent vocals float out of another time and place, drawing you down into the breathless maelstrom created by her band mates.
Although the album has yet to be launched in the UK, reviews have already trickled in.
Writes The Line of Best Fit in its ‘Silent Treatment’ review:
‘...the record is a mature and arresting venture into troubling narrative territories, and one that marks Håvik out as a frontwoman accomplished beyond her years. When it’s not inclined to cast off into distension, Silent Treatment is robust, purposeful and precariously, hauntingly sublime.’
The Guardian chimes in:
‘Loved by Bon Iver, nominated at Norway’s Grammys, they’re like Coldplay with a female singer, only better than that sounds. The music ranges from the subtly atmospheric to the bombastically rousing. If Highasakite had been around in 1990, they would have been on the cover of the Melody Maker every week.’
The album has also racked up an impressive line of reviews in Norway’s biggest dailies:
Dagbladet: 6/6 stars
Aftenposten 6/6 stars
Dagsavisen 6/6 stars
Adresseavisa 6/6 stars
Silent Treatment is set for a European release on March 3rd via Propeller Recordings.
‘Iran’ out now
This week saw the band copping off a strong beginning of the year with a No#1 spot on the national Norwegian Top 40 album charts.
Following in the footsteps of the album’s first single ‘Since Last Wednesday’ now comes ‘Iran’ – a track that fuses eastern accents and folk-tinged melody-lines with powerful tribal drums and Ingrid Håvik’s trademark vocals:
March sees Highasakite playing gigs at SXSW and NYC’s Mercury Lounge before heading out on a stint of European touring starting in early April. The main leg of their European tour features live appearances in Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and the UK – full details in the calendar section below.
