South By Southwest (SXSW) kicks off this week with a total of 21 Norwegian bands confirmed for the festival.
One of the SXSW highlights, as seen from a Norwegian perspective, is the Friday March 14 ‘Norway Night’ at venue Icenhauer’s with record labels Brilliance Records and Jansen Plateproduksjon presenting a diverse roster of talent. Under the ‘Norway Night’ banner, Death By Unga Bunga, Highasakite, Atlanter, Maya Vik, Intertwine and Dråpe are all set to hit Icenhauer’s stage.
Another not-to-be-missed event is the Filter & Øya Festival Norway Showcase at the Cedar Street Courtyard on Sat 15 March at 11:00AM, featuring acts Atlanter, Highasakite and Maya Vik.
In addition to the ‘Norway Night’ and Filter/Øya acts, Awill, Electric Eye, Hedvig Mollestad Trio, Kurt Nilsen, Lemaitre, Samsaya, Trippy Turtle, Slick Shoota, The Launderettes, Obliteration, The Young Mothers and Alexander Von Mehren are all confirmed for SXSW live appearances.
Norwegian acts at SXSW 2014
Two Norwegian music videos are also nominated for the SXSW music video program. Deathcrush’ video for their track Lesson #16 for Beatmaster V / Fire, directed by Kenneth Karlstad is nominated as is the video for Sandra Kolstad’s Run Away (Where are We?), directed by Yenni Lee, alongside videos for such major acts as Placebo, MGMT, Tame Impala and Passion Pit.
South by Southwest is one of the world’s largest music industry festivals, and was held for the first time in 1987. The festival takes place in Austin, Texas, and attracts nearly 12 000 registered participants. Over the years, South By Southwest has become an important venue for international music business.
