This week, Kvitrafn and Gaahl’s dark folk outfit Wardruna was awarded a coveted ‘Best Underground Band’ award at ‘The Metal Hammer Golden Gods.
Says Wardruna founder and composer Einar Selvik: – Despite the fact that Wardruna has little to do with metal in the first place, the band still has a solid following on the metal scene. By nominating us for this coveted award, I see it as a sign of courage on Metal Hammer’s part and a will to look beyond the genre boundaries. It is an award that is solely awarded on basis on votes from fans from every corner of the globe, making it even more rewarding.
Also nominated in Wardruna’s category were Scorpion Child, Deafheaven, Alcest and Beastmilk.
With the use of the oldest of Nordic instruments and poetic metres as well as lyrics written in Norwegian, Old Norse and Proto-Norse tongue, Wardruna is now ready to return with the second album in the ‘Runaljod’ trilogy entitled ‘Yggdrasil’. Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Einar Kvitrafn Selvik has, together with vocalists Kristian Espedal (aka Gaahl) and Lindy-Fay Hella, managed to make a strikingly beautiful and intense continuation of what was started with their first album. ‘Yggdrasil’ is also graced with guest appearances by renowned Icelandic composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson and Iceland’s leading rímur singer Steindór Andersen.
