Week 12 in Review

By Tomas Lauvland Pettersen Posted: 21. Mar, 2014

New I Was A King album, Susanna heading out on US/Canadian tour and a new Waffle mix – it’s our Week in Review.

‘Isle of Yours’ – New I Was A King album out now

This week sees I Was A King releasing their new album ‘Isle of Yours’. In its debut week the band’s fifth outing has racked up a solid list of strong reviews in the domestic press. With their deft blend of melancholic sentimentality and more upbeat tracks, I Was A King’s Anne Lise Frøkedal and Frode Strømstad have come up with an album that’s definitely one of this week’s highlights for us.

Electric Eye to play Ja Ja Ja

Ja Ja Ja returns next week with Electric Eye on the roster. Electric Eye hails from Bergen and has created a stylistic output centred on psychedelica, groovy drones, blues and space rock, bringing them on the same page as Wooden Shjips, Black Angels and The Warlocks.

Mari Kvien Brunvoll + Ricardo Villalobos

Chilean-German star minimalist techno producer/DJ Ricardo Villalobos couldn´t resist the siren like call of Mari Kvien Brunvoll and approached the Norwegian vocalist last year, offering to remix on of her songs. The result, ‘Everywhere you go’ – celestial voice amnesia resurrection mix’ and ‘amnesia rehabilitation dub’ have gained considerable traction lately, being voted track no 1 over at Resident Advisor and generating considerable Soundcloud plays.

Yet Another Music Blog interviewed Bruvoll earlier this week and she spoke at length about the successful artistic collaboration with Villalobos.

Susanna US/Canadian tour

Next week marks the start of Susanna’s US/Canadian tour which includes an appearance at the Big Ears festival, supporting John Cale.

Active for more than a decade, through nine albums so far as Susanna and the Magical Orchestra/Susanna/Susanna Wallumrød, the Oslo-based artist has recently been taking big steps towards greater independence and autonomy, while increasing the range of her considerable talents as a songwriter, vocal interpreter and producer. Live, Susanna performs songs from her whole catalogue; performing both the wide ranging covers with which she has become synonymous, and her self-penned originals.

Live dates are listed in our calendar section.

New Waffle Mix

Hedvig Mollestad Trio got praise both before and after SXSW. The Blot Magazine just named them one of the festivals 25 best acts.  We celebrate by putting the stunner track ‘The Rex’ on top of our revamped ‘‪‎Norwegian Waffle Mix’ playlist‬ on Spotify.

Last year saw In The Country celebrating ten years anniversary, after having played nearly 160 concerts in over 20 countries and released almost half a dozen albums and videos. In The Country has been awarded the ‘Best Norwegian Young Jazz Artists’ in the mid 00´s and they picked up an ‘Independent Music Awards 2012’ for their latest full length art concert film. The trio perform original material penned by multi-keyboardist Morten Qvenild, and arranged in partnership with bass player Roger Arntzen and drummer Pål Hausken.

Live dates are listed in our calendar section.
