Week 22 in Review

By Tomas Lauvland Pettersen Posted: 30. May, 2014

Norwegian Billboard Hot 100 bonanza, Fehrplay with new US signing, the Nordic Music Awards and a new Nordic Playlist – it’s the Music Norway Week in Review.

Fehrplay inks deal with Ultra Music

Rising EDM producer/DJ Fehrplay announced earlier this week that the producer/DJ has tied up with the leading independent electronic dance music record label Ultra Music. http://ultramusic.com/. Over the last months, Fehrplay has performed in Japan, Australia and France before heading over the Atlantic for appearances in Mexico and the US in May. June 21st marks the start of Fehrplay’s Everywhere You Go Tour in the US which features gigs in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Chicago as well as an appearance in the Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana.

Two Norwegian tracks on Billboard’s Top 10

As we’ve reported earlier this week, Nico & Vinz has made it to Billboard Hot 100’s Top 10. To complete a banner week, another Norwegian entry has made it to the coveted Top 10 list: LA-based songwriter and producer Andreas Schuller has written the track ‘Wiggle’ w/Jason Derulo featuring Snoop Dogg which is currently No#10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Arts Desk: ‘Just In From Scandinavia’

The Arts Desk is back with a new ‘Just In From Scandinavia’ feature – a round-up of current new Nordic music. The Norwegian section of the Scandinavian round-up starts with a strong review of Motorpsycho’s ‘Behind the Sun’ album. Writes The Arts Desk’s Kieron Tyler: ‘Without a foot placed wrong, Motorpsycho once again restate their role as one of the planet’s most vital bands.’

Hanne Kolstø is next in line and her latest album is also dealt a healthy dose of praise: ‘Stillness and Panic is modern pop of the highest order. Like a less agitated and friendlier Knife, the album marries grandly ascending songs to programmed, vaguely Afro, beats and warmly acoustic textures.’

Tyler also highlights recent outings from sPacemoNkey (the duo of Morten Qvenild and Gard Nilssen), Moskus, Hedvig Mollestad Trio, Building Instrument, 1982, Arve Henriksen and Cor Amant. Highly recommended reading – check out the full article HERE.

Ja Ja Ja’s Nordic music video awards guide

The very first Nordic Music Video Awards is coming up. The Oslo-held event kicks off this weekend – the fine folks over at Ja Ja Ja have screened the lot and come up with a list of videos that they think are the best in each category and most likely to win. Norwegian entries on the list includes Marie Munroe, Donkeyboy, Yoga Fire, Kvelertak and more. See the entire list HERE.

Synth, Organ and Machine

This weekend, improv outfit Supersilent are performing at a not-to-be-missed event titled ‘Synth, Organ and Machine’ – a gig that is part of the new and innovative London Contemporary Music Festival. For this event the musicians will venture to the wild, fraying edges of electronic music and musical mechanisation. Supersilent will be performing alongside legendary synth pioneer Peter Zinovieff and violinist Aisha Orazbayeva, as well as Conlon Nancarrow, Kit Downes and Tom Challenger.

Nordic Playlist

This week’s Nordic Playlist is curated by one of the most prominent musicians ever to emerge from the Faroe Islands, Hoyvík native Teitur. The Faroese singer/songwriter’s Norwegian favorites included in his deftly curated playlist are well-placed tracks by acts Ane Brun and Erlend Øye.

The latest Nordic Playlist, interviews, DJ mixes, Nordic Top 10 and up-and-coming playlists can be found HERE.
