At a special ceremony Friday, Alan Walker was awarded the 2016 Music Export Award for his incredible accomplishments internationally. At only 19 years young, the artist, producer and DJ have more than 1 billion Spotify streams, 1,5 billion views on Youtube and a world tour even well established artists can dream of.
The trophy was given to Alan Walker by the Norwegian minister of foreign affairs Børge Brende.
– It’s a big honor for me to accept Spellemann and Music Norway’s Export Award, I never imagined this when I started making music some years ago. This award means a lot, especially because Kygo has won it before me, says Alan Walker.
Included in the prize is a grant of NOK 100.000 called “This Is Where It Started” which Alan gave to USF Verftet in Bergen. USF houses artists and industry, and have several venues where a big part of the people of Bergen have had their first ever concert experience.
– This award aims to strengthen and inspire the entire musical value chain. But most important is still the artist’s creativity. The urge to reach out with the what you have inside you. The ability to hit both ears and hearts. The joy when you succeed. But music also tells us who we are – and contributes to knowledge and understanding across country borders. Culture and diplomacy is both about creating trust and safety through joint interaction. This year’s winner is not just an artist, but an ambassador. And he knows he’s not alone, says Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende.
This is the second time the Export Award is awarded. Kygo received the award last year.
Alan Walker’s manager Gunnar Greve says the two years they’ve worked together has been a journey.
– No more than 2 years have gone since we discovered Alan Walker, by accident. As we got to know him and his music, we realized that we were working with a unique talent. We were convinced Alan had potential to break through globally, but there were no certainties that it would happen as fast as it did. The past year and a half has been an amazing journey for both Alan and the team around him, and today’s award from Spellemann and Music Norway’s Export Award is a big honor.
Impossible not to notice his merits, says jury
– The Export Award is given a Norwegian artist who had an international breakthrough in 2016, and has contributed to more eyes and ears on Norwegian talents and Norwegian music industry from an international audience. Alan Walker’s megahit Faded put a yet another Norwegian artist on the map. In 2016, the young artist, DJ and producer have reached international stardom. With songs as Faded, Alone and Sing Me To Sleep, Alan Walker have had headline tours in Europe, Asia, North and Central America, and played some of the biggest festivals in the world. Walker’s music has surpassed incredible 1,3 billion streams, 1,25 billion views on Youtube and 2 million downloads. An impressive merit list, which is impossible not to notice. That is why we’re honoring you today Alan Walker, and give you the Export Award for 2016. Congrats!
