The Norwegian artist has released her first album completely in English and with the new label MPS

“Some melodies I pick from the trees like fruit”, says Mari Boine about her songwriting process. The singer has been the unofficial ambassador of the Sami people in the far north of Scandinavia for more than two decades.

But of course, songwriting doesn’t always come this easy. “Other songs are harder to shape”, adds Boine. “See the Woman” reveals new facets of the Norwegian singer, who is well known for her tribalistic songs in between World Music and Jazz.

“I have been singing in my native language for 30 years. It was time to do something different. It was a real challenge to compose the music that I dreamt about when I was young.”

“See the Woman” is an album shaped by international cooperation. Most lyrics are from artists descending from Australia, New Zealand, Germany, South Africa and the USA. Where Mari adapted them from poems, songs and prose texts over a period of several years. It’s a work of art from a female perspective, reflecting the role of women in today’s society.

In addition, some of the Sweden’s most acknowledged pop musicians have been a part of the new album. Including cellist and singer-songwriter Linnea Olsson, keyboardist Robert Elovsson of Robyn’s liveband, drummer Lars Skoglund of Lykke Li fame and producer Tobias Frøberg, well known for his work with Ane Brun and Lisa Ekdahl.

Mari will be touring the next month in Germany and Austria, see when and where below.
